Fossilised Frequencies

Fossilised Frequencies

At 4pm today — Fossilised Frequencies by Peilin Shi and Riah Naief.

This experimental broadcast weaves together archival Hakka songs—mountain chants, lullabies, and folklore—with live vocals and global field recordings. Originally gathered in Lianping, China, for the preservation of Hakka oral culture, these voices are layered into a living sonic landscape. A collaboration rooted in memory, care, and deep listening. Fossilised Frequencies is an experimental radio show combining hertz and voices found throughout different regions of the world – creating listening experiences that connect us to the vast ever present sonic landscapes of our world.

Fossilised Frequencies is a monthly radio project hosted by Riah from Listen Gallery at their residency at Radio Buena Vida. In the summer of 2024, Riah and Peilin produced this one hour broadcast layering archival material with live recorded singing in Hakka, bringing these raw recordings to ancient Hakka sounds to life.
