Being stuck on hold, waiting to eventually speak with a representative, is an experience everyone knows—yet no one shares. You press your ear against the receiver and keep your mouth shut so as not to miss that crucial moment. We all hear and say the exact same things—much like at a concert, yet in total isolation. It’s time, to give it a public space. Antje Vowinckel listened to many recorded messages before finally being connected.

Antje Vowinckel is a Berlin based composer, radio artist and musician. Her works can be heard on radio stations such as Deutschlandfunk, SWR, WDR, HR, BR; at festivals such as Donaueschinger Musiktage, Ruhtrienale, Eclat-Festival Stuttgart or at concert venues such as ZKM Karlsruhe, Issue-Project Room New York, Sophiensäle Berlin.
For her compositions with sound bites she developed the methods of Automatic Speaking and Dialect-Karaoke. Furthermore, she creates installations and performances in public spaces, which are aimed at a random and wider audience. The main focus of her work is in Germany, but her pieces are also presented internationally, e.g. her piece Call me Yesterday was broadcast and presented in 18 countries.
Broadcasts, performances and competition participations in: France, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Croatia, Spain, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Czech Republic, Poland, Bulgaria, Portugal, USA, Canada, Australia. In addition, she occasionally works as a juror (Berlin Senate, HBK Braunschweig, inm-Berlin), curator, essayist and lecturer, among others at UDK Berlin, HFG Karlsruhe. She has received numerous international awards for her work, including the Prix Europa and the Karl Sczuka Prize.
