Nichola Scrutton and Zoë Strachan – Carbon Hum (live in the studio)
Friday, 18 September⋅5:00 – 5:30pm
At 5pm composer, Nichola Scrutton and award-winning fiction writer, Zoë Strachan join us live in the studio for ‘Carbon Hum’ – a live-to-air broadcast that celebrates ten years of their collaborative practice and a creative process they call ‘test-pitting’. The performance weaves together field recordings – raw and processed, found sound, extended voice and spoken word with original/archive text.
Test-pitting gestures towards the archaeological process of using an auger to extract and reveal material layers gathered over time; fragmented artefacts and traces of presence, human and more than human. This informs a palimpsest of sound that combines composition and improvisation, and explores new or re-imagined lines of connection across time and place.
