Aminata Soumaré – Majesa

At 9pm tonight – Malian-Belgian sound artist and choreographer Aminata Soumaré presents ‘Majesa’ – a spatial audio collage that questions the representation of Black women in media across both global and Flemish cultural and political contexts.
Drawing from recurring historical stereotypes like the Mammy, Sapphire, and Jezebel, the work weaves together archival materials to examine how these representations persist and transform across different cultural landscapes.
Through layered fragments of interviews, archival recordings, and found media, the piece creates a spatial environment where these stereotypes can be questioned, reinforced, contradicted, and brought into dialogue with one another. Different cultural elements collide and interact, forming a new realm where the complexity of Black women’s representation becomes audible through the tension and interplay between opposing narratives.
