Andrea Rickhaus – Rates And Vibrations Of Granular Levels

At 8:30pm Andrea Rickhaus explores divergent temporalities within production processes in ‘Rates And Vibrations Of Granular Levels’.
While industrial machinery crushes, sorts, and processes stones at high speed in gravel plants, rivers simultaneously erode rocks into sand grains over geological timescales. The co-existence of these contrasting temporal structures generates a desynchronization that Hartmut Rosa diagnoses in accelerated production processes.
The soundpiece was performed at the opening of Memory & Sustainability at Bern University of Applied Sciences. It integrates field recordings from a Swiss gravel plant, gravel pit, and underwater captures from the Aare River in Bern—digitally processed through modulation, fragmentation, and granulation. During the live performance, these processed materials were combined with synthesizer and stones collected from the river, live-modulated using contact microphones and effect devices.
The piece is conceived as a circular composition that alternates between industrial dynamics and geological time, exploring varied textures and movements of material transformation while seeking moments of resonance.
