Stone Shadow

Cinzia Nistico – Stone Shadow

Wednesday, 16 September⋅4:30 – 5:00pm

At 4:30pm – Amsterdam based artist and filmmaker Cinzia Nistico conducts an interview with a film projector.

“The idea for ‘Shadow Stone’ came when I saw pictures of a human shadow etched in stone, as an effect of the atomic bombing on Hiroshima. It is the shadow of a man, or a woman, sitting on the stairs of a bank, at the instant when the bomb detonated. The effect of the bomb created the imprinting of his/her shadow on the stone. The dynamic with which the atomic bomb operates and destroys, somehow made me think of the printing process of analogue film. Optical sounds depends heavily on light exposure. Once the film is imprinted it stays permanently. All of the sounds from each section in this piece were printed on to a single film strip with no further digital manipulation of the sound. The overlaid sounds are the result of multiple exposures and other printing distortions.

August 6th 2025 marked 80 years since the Hiroshima bombing. ‘Stone Shadow’ is intended as a commemoration of this atrocity through a surreal interview with an Eimo film projector. The work is based on film footage (atomic bomb detonation, extracts from eye witness, reports on the effects of the bombing) elaborated in counterpoint along with distortions and multiple exposures by means of hand-print processes and other hands-on-film techniques.

The devastating effect of the atomic bomb on human bodies and the printing techniques on film resonate with each other. Light, temperature and exposure all play a vital role. This work is an opportunity to reflect on the traumatic effects of the large scale devastation caused by war.”
