Natalia Emilia Rivera Riffo – The animist acoustics
Wednesday, 16 September⋅9:00 – 10:00am
This morning at 9am – Natalia Emilia Rivera Riffo presents ‘The animist acoustics’ – an intuitive dialogue between two ancestral cosmovisions that share an animistic understanding of the Earth; where rivers, stones, and winds are living presences.
The Animist Acoustics Series unfolds from a sound residency at ARLY in Sweden, developed through decolonial interviews and exchanges between Sámi and Mapuche perspectives.
Recorded along the Ångermanälven River, the main composition weaves voices, silences, and the murmuring current into a site-specific soundscape shaped by deep listening. A second piece, improvised inside the Svanö cisterns, unfolds through melancholic voices escaping an erratic heartbeat, seeking circular echoes within resonant space. Low tones from flute and piano strings fill the cavernous architecture with haunting vibrations.
Created through respectful exchange, the series connects distant territories, exploring cultural resonance without appropriation. Rooted in the artist’s mestiza identity and Mapuche heritage, it affirms sound as a space of resistance and spiritual dialogue with the Earth.
