Gabi Schaffner – Ikura-san: About Ghosts and The Future of Mankind

This morning at 9:30am we listen in on a fascinating conversation Gabi Schaffner recorded whilst she and Daniel Miller were waiting for their food at the Bossa Bar in Kobe.
“Ikura-san’s bar was bathed in golden November light, the wooden furniture, a multitude of displayed items and the counter gleaming as if to rival the rows of flashing bottles and glasses. Two large television screens were showing a science fiction anime film oozing a 60s male gaze. The day before, I had read about the Japanese concept of “Tsukumogami” (付喪神, “artefact spirits”): Animated everyday objects in Japanese folklore. Mr Ikura skilfully polished glasses while answering my questions about garbage and the values we attribute to it.”
