Gardika Gigih – Arung: Soundscape Stories from Southeast Asia and Japan

At 2pm Indonesian composer, pianist, and soundscape researcher Gardika Gigih takes us on an audio tour of Southeast Asia and Japan.
In 2019 Gigih made a journey across Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, and Japan to record and study soundscapes as cultural narratives, as a way for us to see and learn from each other through the diversity of daily sounds.
Over the course of the piece ‘Arung – Soundscape Stories from Southeast Asia and Japan’ you will hear sounds of Muay Thai supporters in Bangkok, Thailand; the Hau Dong ritual at Ninh Binh, Vietnam; immigrant workers around Southeast Asia, gathering on Sunday morning in front of St. Paul’s Cathedral, Singapore; frogs and insects from Tam Coc, Gongs from Wat Pan On, Chiang Mai, Yamadera Temple water in Yamagata, Japan; Akihabara Pachinko noise; and many more. This research was supported by the Japan Foundation Asia Center Fellowship 2019.
