At 5.30pm today – all the way from Jersey City, USA, Elise Macmillan invites us to dine at Stella’s 24-Hour Eatery.
The restaurant table of this Jersey diner provides the stage for an experimental live radio broadcast, mixing together live audio and archival traces that are sifted through in real time while sitting at the table. The shuffle of transcribing sheet music, excerpts of voice memo song ideas from the early 2000’s played from an audio recorder found in a drawer, and recordings from practice sessions are opened and played back at the table. Folders of impulse responses gathered to make convolution reverbs from various acoustically interesting spaces are played through and merged into the live mix. The unfolding situation at Stella’s, passing conversation, drone of refrigeration, and repeated unanswered greetings bleed into the broadcast, becoming part of the piece. The result is a remote live stream from a 24-hour diner in New Jersey.
