Pheobe riley Law – Sound:run:brea(d)th
Thursday, 17 September⋅6:30 – 7:00pm
At 6:30pm – we go for a run with installation artist Pheobe riley Law in a piece originally created for Semi Silent’s ‘Sonic Future Residencies’ series.
Sound:run:brea(d)th originated in a series of daily sound-runs undertaken by the artist, who approached each new location as a brief but attentive encounter. Moving through each environment at running pace, they listened to the rhythms of the place alongside the rhythm of their own breath, before later returning to experience the same spaces more slowly and attentively.
Alongside these sonic explorations, Pheobe filmed with an old, low-resolution camcorder while moving through both indoor and outdoor environments. Encounters with people, unexpected electronic pulses, and small, resonant everyday objects became points of attention—elements whose overlooked sonic qualities the work seeks to bring into focus.
The artist conceived Sound:run:brea(d)th as a kind of theatre: a space of multiple, continuously shifting scenes in which things are uncovered only to become covered again. The work brings together field recordings from public squares and architectural spaces with the inner sounds of locally grown fruit, soil from an apartment garden, plant roots and branches, a milk vending machine along the Bega River, and bird deterrent devices, creating a layered sonic landscape in which the everyday unfolds as performance.
