Network Music Glasgow – ‘Caketop’ (live in the studio)
Thursday, 17 September⋅5:00 – 5:30pm
At 5pm today we have Network Music Glasgow live in the studio. Network Music Glasgow is a computer music group with five core members; Neil Quigley, Rachel Ní Chuinn, Simon Weins, Laurie Pitt and Nicholas Cooney. They work with audio-visual programming languages to collaborate, compose and perform music in real-time through Wifi networks.
‘Caketop’ is a piece for laptops and modified speakers, utilising tin whistles and bioplastic to transform audio outputs into hybrid, quasi-acoustic instruments. Triggered by sub-audio frequencies, which are inaudible on their own, the piece explores the tactility of air as a physical medium and building instruments from cultural detritus.
‘Caketop’ is part of an ongoing exploration into collaborative strategies around using networks as organisational and performative tools in the compositional process. All pieces by NMG allow performers to share data in real-time through Wifi networks, resulting in emergent behaviour that is different each time the pieces are performed.
