Esyllt Angharad Lewis & Amie Huckstep – tatws melys (live in the studio)

Saturday, 5 September⋅5:00 – 5:30pm

At 5pm Esyllt Angharad Lewis & Amie Huckstep kick off our in-studio performances by local artists with the piece ‘tatws melys’.

This new spoken-word and music performance piece puts the voice of Esyllt Angharad Lewis in dialogue with Amie Huckstep’s saxophone and clarinet, in a humorous and surreal exploration of language, its consumption and regurgitation. Esyllt will play with the sounds of her languages, Welsh and English, and use her voice to explore the tensions between them, whilst Amie cuts across and/or adds to this tension with the ‘voice’ of the saxophone – either accompanying, interrupting, or taking over from the spoken word. Working with liveness and surprise, much of the ‘dialogue’ between the voice and the saxophone will be improvised, with some parts carefully rehearsed, creating a sense of organised chaos, and the idea that anything may happen, that the energy of the performance could soar or collapse at any point. ‘tatws melys’ will also include guest vocals from their friends and collaborators.
